As we prepare for the 2019 African Nations Cup which commences in two months time, there has been a lot of changes in this year’s edition. It is going to be a bit different from the previous editions due to the expansion of participating countries from 16-24.
The Confederation of African Football has also decided to pass the introduction of VAR in the 2019 AFCON to avoid some mistakes and ensure fairness in the knockout games.
CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad has confirmed in an interview that the speculated story is true. He added by saying that we are not going to see the VAR working in the group stages but will start operating from the knockout face till the competition ends.
This is going to be the first time we will be witnessing this in the AFCON as CAF believes with the introduction of VAR, it is going to help the referees very well in the tournament so they won’t commit a lot of mistakes. It will also ensure fairness and results will reflect truly to the games.
