After a crucial draw game at Anderlecht away from home yesterday, KRC Genk have been crowned champions of the 2018/19 Belgian League A following a 2-0 loss Club Brugge suffered in the hands of Standard Liege. This extended the gap between Genk and the second place Brugge to 4 points with only a game to wrap up the season.
Defender Joseph Aidoo and former Tema Youth forward, Joseph Paintsil were part of this successful campaign of Genk having won the league for the first time since 2011.
In the game itself, the home side Anderlecht opened the scoring on the 11th minute through Bryan Heynen. It took a bullet header from Everton loanee Yannick Bolasie on the 65th minute to bring the Smurfs back on level terms.
Manager Philippe Clement introduced Joseph Paintsil into the game on the 58th minute where he came in to replace Junya Ito from Japan whiles defender Joseph Aidoo was an unused substitute yesterday. Paintsil has 5 goals and an assist in 33 appearance in his debut season for the Smurfs whiles Aidoo has also played 35 games this season having scored two goals as a centre back.
KRC Genk lifted their fourth league title in their history and the first time since 2011. They won with some African nationals in their set up. These players include the goal machine from Tanzania, Mboana Ali Samatta, on loan Everton player Yannick Bolasie from DR Congo and the two other Ghanaians.
