Brazil recorded a comfortable victory over Bolivia last Friday in the opening game of the 2019 Copa America. The mantle was then given to Argentina yesterday in their opening group B encounter against Colombia at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador. The Los Cafeteros were 2-0 winners at the end.
The game started with very high intensity. It was a typical South American football that was displayed yesterday in Salvador with a lot of pace and physics. Winger Luis Muriel picked an injury on the 14th minutes which forced manager Carlos Queiroz to bring on Roger Martinez who came and broke the deadlock.
It was a pure physical game with a lot of combative play in the midfield. Wilmar Barriors and Mateus Uribe dominated the Argentine midfield. They spreaded decent passes to the wings and also made sure they recovered as quick as possible anytime they lost the ball.
The Argentine midfielder in Leandro Paredes, Giovanni Lo Celso and Guido Rodriguez were off due to the fact that they gave a lot of faulty passes and were also dispossessed on so many occasions. The first half ended barren.
It was Argentina all of over in the second half, they came very close to score after goalkeeper Ospina prevented German Pezzela’s rocket from scoring.
Again, a bullet header from Nicolas Otamendi tested the goalkeeper once gain who couldn’t have the best of punches but Lionel Messi failed to score Argentina’s best chance of the game after heading wide from the post.
James Rodriguez sent a long defence splitting pass which spotted Roger Martinez on the left flanks, he went round Saravia and fired into the top right corner to put Colombia in front.
Another substitute in Duvan Zapata who came on for Rademel Falcao on the 81st minutes, tapped into the net at close range from Jefferson Lemar’s cross to seal everything for the Los Cafeteros.
Argentina host Paraguay in their next game at the Belo Horizonte, a must win game for them.
