Nigeria becomes the first team to advance to the round 16 after a narrow win over Guinea

The Super Eagles of Nigeria becomes the first country to secure a round of sixteen place after narrowly defeating the Syli Nationals by 1-0 at the Alexandria stadium.

Centre back Kenneth Omeruo’s 73rd minutes header made the difference for the Super Eagles after been stretched out widely by the Guineans especially in the first department of the game.

The first half produced an entertaining game with both teams well organised on the pitch and also disciplined tactically. It was a clash of stars in the centre circle with both teams having talented players in that particular zone. The battle between Etebo, Ndidi and Iwobi against the likes of Keita, Diawara and Cisse was challenging and promising. The Guinean midfield dominated slightly in the first half but Nigerians were all over in the second half.

The Nigerians dominated the second half throughout especially in the early stages. Ahmed Musah made a lovely run on the left flanks, sent in a ground inswinger but his effort was cut out by Issiaga Syla which resulted into a corner kick. A quick one was taken with Alex Iwobi sending in a brilliant curler but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Ibrahim Kone.

Again, another brilliant corner kick was taken by Moses Simon from the left side which picked up Kenneth Omeruo who connected into the net with a powerful header to put the Eagles ahead. Again, he was also solid for the Super Eagles at the back handling Guinean forward Sori Baka very well and that has earned him the man of the match award in the game today.

The Syli Nationals still have a chance to qualify despite the defeat today, they will host Burundi in their last group game which is a must win for them whiles already-qualified Nigeria will play Madagascar.
