After been given a heroes welcome in Manchester City’s final home fixture last season, another great honour was done to Vincent Kompany yesterday by playing a testimonial game for him at the Etihad stadium.
It was a fantastic event at the end with massive attendance from the Cityzens since they were there to honour their club’s greatest skipper in History. Over 50, 000 fans were present at the Etihad yesterday to observe this great event.
Vincent Kompany couldn’t feature in his own testimonial game due to an injury he sustained few weeks ago since he is still at post as the player-coach of Belgian giant Anderlecht.
Below is the players for both sides:
Manchester City Stars headed by Pep Guardiola and Vincent Kompany:
Joe Hart, Costel Pantilimon, Micah Richards, Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, Richard Dunne, Joleon Lescott, Kolo Toure, Nigel De Jong, Steven Ireland, Dietar Hamann, Martin Petrov, Samir Nasri, Shaun Wright-Phillips, David Silva, James Milner, Craig Bellamy, Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli and Benjani Wariwari.
Premier League Stars coached by Roberto Martinez and Thierry Henry:
Edwin Van Der Sar, Shay Given, Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Michael Carrick, John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Cesc Fabrigas, Nicky Butt, Rafael Van Der Vaart, Paul Schooles, Ryan Giggs, Robin Van Persie and Robby Keane.
It was a four goal thriller at the Etihad after a 2-2 drawn game. Man City Stars opened the scoring in the early minutes of the game through Martin Petrov after been set up by David Silva with a fine defence splitting pass who also made no mistake by plotting into the top corner.
After that early opener, the Premier League Stars responded on the 30th minute through Robby Keane after tapping into the net from a close range thanks to a fine assist from Robin Van Persie. It ended 1-1 at half time.
In the second department of the game, Robin Van Persie connected with two players and sends in a fine curler from outside the box to give Joe Hart no chance to record the Premier League Stars second of the night. When everybody thought the men in blue-black were winning, Benjani Wariwari headed from Nigel De Jong’s free kick on the 89th minute to level the score for Man City Stars. It finished 2-2 at the end.
After the game and everything, in addition to Vincent honours, Manchester City have named him after a road that connect the CFA youth pitches to that of the First Team Centre. Again, a statue of him will be built at the Etihad Stadium.
