President of the Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad landed in Cairo-Egypt last night to grace the opening ceremony of the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
The third edition of the tournament is commencing tonight as host nation Egypt will be taking on Mali at the Cairo International Stadium. The competition is expected to run for only two weeks as it starts from 8-22 November.
In the same group and on the same day, the Ghana Black Meteors will also host Cameroon in their opening fixture of the competition. The battle of the debutants is going a herculean clash since both countries will want to prove a point in their maiden edition.
Elsewhere in Group B, defending champions Nigeria will take on Ivory Coast tomorrow whereas South Africa will take on Nigeria on the same day. The top two teams from each group cruises to the Semis before the final.
Despite going through three rounds of qualifiers prior to this tournament, the eight countries will also have to battle it out for the three slots to the 2020 Olympic Games.
The two finalists will automatically secure a spot to represent Africa in men’s soccer in the 2020 Olympic Games whiles the third place country will also take on a country from the Asian Confederation in a playoff.
