Italian side Atalanta B.C have been handed the permission to honour their UEFA Champions League games at the Estadio Giussepe Meazza (San Siro) in the upcoming season.
Despite the eligibility of their home grounds, Stade Atleti Azzuri d’Italia to host Champions League games since it meets the UEFA standard, the Bengarmo side opted for the San Siro due to renovations that is about to be done at the stadium.
Initially, fans of both the Rosseneries and the Nerazurries did not want to accept that but due to the inability of A.C Milan to compete in the Champions League next season, Atalanta’s proposal was approved by the City Council of Milan. This is the official statement:
“We can confirm that we accept Atalanta’s request to be able to play their Champions League home matches at San Siro,” they told ANSA.
“Our decision comes in compliance with the positive opinion of Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala and after having understood the strong desire of the Bergamo club.
“We believe this opportunity is beneficial not only for Atalanta but also all of Italian football as it is inspired by important values such as the sense of hospitality, respect and ‘fair play’.”
However, this is not the first time Atalanta is playing their home games in Europe outside their home grounds. They honoured all their home games in the 2017/18 Europa League campaign at US Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium.
Atalanta did not just qualify for the Champions League for the first time but were sensational in the just ended season after finishing third in the just ended Serie A season which means it was only champions Juventus and second placed SSC Napoli.
