President’s Cup Preview: Asante Kotoko vrs Hearts of Oak

The much anticipated Presidential Cup game is finally coming up this afternoon between the two arc rivals of Ghana football, Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at the famous Baba Yara Stadium. It is the game many believed to be a curtain raiser for the upcoming season which commences on the weekend of 27-29 of this month.

The President Cup is an annual football game which is organised to honour the sitting president of the country. It is a one off game which can involve any of the clubs in Ghana. The team who has won this trophy the most is Asante Kotoko with five titles.

Initially, this game was to be cleared off in September but ended abruptly due to a heavy downpour of rain in Kumasi on the day. It suffered another setback after been scheduled to take place on December 18 due to the poor state of the Ohene Gyan stadium after Hip Hop artist Cardi B used the stadium for her concert when she visited the country few weeks ago.

Asante Kotoko have reappointed Maxwell Konadu as their new head coach who is looking to build a strong team for the 2019/20 season and sees this game as a good test for him to the strength of his side. The team have confirmed the signing of Kwame Adom Frimpong with Sam Adams and Ibrahim Imoro likely to join soon.

Coach Kim Grant is also focusing much on his youthful side with some few additions to be made. Goalkeeper Richard Attah has already joined the Phobians whiles they still look to add Ansah Botchway and others to the squad as the new season approaches.

The Porcupine Warriors have engaged themselves in some friendlies to warm and prepare very well for the upcoming season. The team defeated Ebusua Dwarfs 0-2 in Cape Coast before drawing goalless with division one side Skyy FC in Daboase.

As part of preparations towards this game, the Phobians also played some preparatory games to jell themselves very well for the new season. They team drew 1-1 with Wa All Stars in Accra, lost 1-0 to first division side Okyeman Planners before beating Togolese side Etoile Filante by 1-0 in Lome.


Asante Kotoko have been boosted with the return of captain Felix Annan, Evans Mensah, Maxwell Baako and Abdul Ganiu Ismail. This indicates Coach Maxwell Konadu will have all his best players available to select from.

Meanwhile, is totally different in the camp of the Phobians as two key players, Fataw Mohammed and Joseph Esso are all unlikely to feature this afternoon due to an unknown reasons whiles Daniel Kodie still remains doubtful for this top liner.
