The much expected 2019/20 Ghana Premier league commenced yesterday after 18 months without active football in the country. The games produced some exciting and interesting scenes across all the nine centres with fans trooping in the various stadia in numbers to exhibit how much they have really missed the local game.
The first week recorded massive 25 goals in nine games with the usual home dominant trend as the day stored five home victories with three away wins and a drawn game in the end.
Berekum Chelsea, Medeama S.C and WAFA all picked vital points away from home, unusual in the Ghana premier league in previous years.
*Asante Kotoko 1-0 Eleven Wonders
Giant Asante Kotoko had a good start of the season following a narrow victory over Techiman base Eleven Wonders at the Baba Yara Stadium. Midfielder Justice Blay with the goal which remains the first goal of the 2019/20 season as the goal was scored less than five minutes from the blast of the referee’s whistle. The Porcupine Warriors had a lot of opportunities to score more but all proved futile.
*Hearts of Oak 0-1 Berekum Chelsea.
Elsewhere in the nation’s capital, Hearts of Oak were pipped by Berekum Chelsea thanks to a 34th minute strike from Jonas Attuquaye. The Phobians tried any means possible in the second half to get back on level but all their efforts yielded nothing.
*Aduana Stars 4-0 Inter Allies
The “Ogya” boys started the season on a high note after humiliating the Capelli boys at the Nana Agyemang Badu II Park by an emphatic 4-0 triumph. Skipper Yahya Mohammed netted a hatrick making him the first player to achieve that in the new season. Justice Anane with the fourth goal to wrap it up in Dormaa. They have started their defence very well as they go top of the league table after the first round of games.
*Ashanti Gold S.C 3-0 Great Olympics
The streets of Obuasi was left in a total joy last night as the Miners began the season with a fine start following the 3-0 thrashing they gave to Olympics yesterday at the Len Clay Stadium. Goals scored by centre-back, Mubarik Yussif, Amos Addai before captain Shafiu Mumuni added his name on the score sheet after converting from the spot.
*Dreams FC 4-1
King Faisel FC
It was a total demolishing exercise in Dawu as the exploits of Emmanuel Ocran propelled the Still Believe boys to walkover Premier league returnees King Faisel by 4-1. Ocran struck twice before Abdulai Ibrahim and Ahmed Dantani added the rest. Abdul Latif Mohammed with the consolation for the “Insha Allah” lads.
*Ebusua Dwarfs 1-3 Medeama
Goals from Ebenezer Ackahbi, Prince Opoku and Nana Kofi Babil was enough for the Mauves and Yellows to claim all three points in Cape Coast. Albert Gaisie with the consolation for the Crabs.
*Karela United 0-1 WAFA
The Academy boys were part of the three teams that recorded away wins after match week one after stunning Tarkwa to beat Karela United by a loan goal at the Akoon Park. Youngster, Forson Amankwah with the difference.
Liberty 2-2 Legon Cities FC
Newly-branded Legon Cities FC gave away their two goal lead in the second to drew 2-2 with Liberty Professionals in Dansoman yesterday. This is the only drawn game that was witnessed in the first round of games.
*Bechem United 2-0 Elmina Sharks
At the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, the Hunters made a good start after humbling Elmina Sharks by 2-0 kind courtesy goals from Kwadwo Asamoah and Prince Adu Kwabena.
