The much anticipated game finally comes up this afternoon as two Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko battle it out against each other in a herculean clash at the Ohene Gyan Stadium.
Dubbed the SUPERCLASH, it is obvious this encounter is the biggest and has the fierce rivalry and great history than any other game in Ghana football and this season’s fixture will be coming up on matchweek six.
Hearts of Oak has been in a good form limiting it to their last three games in the league. Narrow win over Dwarfs, a draw at the fortress, Sogakope and a superb comeback over the Scientific Soccer lads last week in Dansoman summarises everything.
However, it hasn’t been the same story in Kumasi as the Porcupine Warriors recorded two consecutive defeats against Chelsea in Kumasi and Medeama in Tarkwa. Players traumatised? No as they bounced back stronger last week to beat Ebusua Dwarfs by 2-0 in Kumasi.
The Phobians had a shaky start which even led to the sacking of their head coach Kim Grant for Edward Odoom to take over having lost their first two games against Chelsea in Accra and the Mauves and Yellows in Tarkwa. With two wins, a draw and two defats, the Capital base club are currently found 11th on the league log with seven points.
While the Phobians were having a suspect start, Asante Kotoko started on a higher note with a victory over Eleven Wonders and also a resounding 3-1 thrashing they handed to Legon Cities at the Accra stadium on week two. They are sitting 7th on the league table with nine points having won three and lost two after five games.
Asante Kotoko will have the bragging right heading into this crucial encounter after emerging victorious over the Phobians in their last two games. Kotoko defeated them in the Semi final of the NC special competition tier one and just recently a 2-1 win over the Phobians in the Presidential Cup.
However, their last league meeting favours Hearts of Oak with that narrow win in Kumasi thanks to Patrick Razak’s solitary second half strike. Again, their last league encounter in Accra also went in favour of the Phobians kind courtesy Vincent Atingah’s late penalty.
Hearts of Oak will be without their forward Kwadwo Obeng Junior in this crucial encounter which was confirmed to them a week ago. Another huge blow about to hit Coach Nii Odoom as his pollsters boy Joseph Esso also look doubtful for this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko have been boosted with the return of midfielders Collins Ameyaw and Mudasiru Salifu whiles centre-back Agyemang Badu will miss out due to suspension after accumulating three yellow cards. Fresh reports indicates Coach Maxwell Konadu has left Songne Yacouba out of his squad for this crucial clash.
